1. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) plan to create a five-star rating for home health agencies and begin the transition by the end of 2014 or early 2015. According to CMS, the rating system will be published on the Home Health Compare website to allow for customers to have a uniform method of judging the performance of different providers.

2. CMS began imposing non-monetary sanctions in July of 2013, such as a directed plan of correction, where CMS staff directed the organization’s plan of correction, or directed their in-service training, or directed temporary management, where CMS could bring in staff to manage the organization at the facility’s expense, if necessary.
However CMS is scheduled to begin by July1 2014, imposing civil monetary penalties for home health agencies out of compliance. Depending on the number of days the agency is not in compliance, or for each instance the agency is not in compliance these sanctions could range up to $10,000 per day.
